The ancient walls with six gates, historical buildings, and artisan workshops where millennia-old techniques are still practiced, alongside monuments, Roman remains, and churches, make Bevagna a true treasure chest in the Valle Umbra. Here, the clear waters of the Clitunno, Timia, and Teverone rivers meet, creating a unique landscape.
The Palazzo dei Consoli, dating back to the 13th century, features a striking Gothic style with a loggia on the ground floor, double windows on two levels, and a staircase leading to the Teatro dei Torti, a 19th-century gem decorated by painters Mariano Piervittori and Domenico Bruschi.
The Church of San Michele, built at the end of the 12th century, fascinates with its three-nave architecture and finely crafted portal. Inside, 17th-century frescoes and works of art, including the silver statue of Saint Vincenzo by Peter Ramoser, pay tribute to the history of the village.
The Church of San Silvestro, with its Romanesque façade and Umbrian frescoes, is an authentic architectural gem.
The Church of San Domenico and Giacomo, built in 1291, houses 14th-century frescoes, wooden sculptures, and paintings from later centuries. The cloister features frescoes depicting the life of Blessed Giacomo Bianconi.
Bridge over the Clitunno and Other Points of Interest
The picturesque entrance to Bevagna is through the bridge over the Clitunno River, considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. From here, one can enjoy a stunning view of Accolta, the ancient public laundry. Continuing along Via Santa Margherita, you reach the Church and Monastery of Santa Margherita, restored in the 17th century and enriched with works of art by Ascensidonio Spacca and Andrea Camassei.
To fully immerse yourself in the medieval atmosphere of Bevagna, the Medieval Crafts Circuit offers visitors a journey through time at the Mercato delle Gaite. This annual event, held in June, recreates the life of the Bevagna community from the 12th-13th centuries, showcasing four medieval crafts: Papermaking, Silk-weaving, Candle-making, and Painting.
